In partnership with Stellenbosch Business School, our Founder and Managing Director, Rucien Petersen, recently facilitated a Social Media for Business Masterclass in East London.

This workshop was designed for business owners and entrepreneurs looking to strengthen their digital presence, improve their online marketing and use social media more strategically for growth.

Key Focus Areas from the Workshop included:

A major focus of the masterclass was helping business owners understand that successful social media begins with strategy. Before creating content, businesses need clarity on who they are targeting, which platforms are most relevant, and what objectives they want to achieve.

Participants were guided through building practical social media strategies aligned to their business goals, audience behaviour and brand messaging. The session reinforced the importance of moving away from random posting and toward intentional, value-driven communication.

One of the biggest challenges business owners face is knowing what to post and how often to post it.

During this session, participants learned how to create practical monthly content plans, structure content calendars and develop a healthy mix of educational, promotional, storytelling and engagement content.

The emphasis was on creating authentic content that educates, inspires and builds trust with audiences rather than simply promoting products or services.

Social media without measurement often leads to wasted effort.

This section unpacked key metrics such as reach, impressions, engagement, audience growth and content performance. Participants learned how to use analytics to better understand what content is resonating and where improvements are needed.

By understanding performance data, businesses can make smarter marketing decisions and refine their strategies over time.

A brand’s reputation is now shaped as much online as it is offline.

The workshop explored the importance of monitoring brand sentiment, engaging professionally online and managing difficult conversations when they arise.

Through case studies and recent brand examples participants were reminded that reputation management is not only about handling negative feedback, but also about intentionally building trust, professionalism and credibility online.

Artificial Intelligence continues to transform how businesses market and create content.

Participants were introduced to practical tools such as ChatGPT, Canva, and Opus Clip to improve content ideation, caption writing, design, video repurposing and workflow efficiency.

A strong focus was placed on using AI as a support tool that enhances productivity while maintaining authenticity and strategic thinking.

As AI-generated content becomes more common, businesses must be increasingly mindful of what they share online.

The workshop addressed online misinformation, fact-checking and the reputational risks of sharing inaccurate content. Businesses were encouraged to prioritise credibility and digital responsibility.

The final section focused on digital safety, including account security, password management, scam awareness and protecting business assets online.

Today’s business owners need more than access to digital platforms they need the knowledge, confidence, and frameworks to use them effectively.

Through partnerships such as this with Stellenbosch Business School, Spottmedia remains committed to empowering businesses and organisations with practical digital skills that drive growth.
