Facebook Shops for Small Businesses

With the recent spate of events looming from direct effects of the Covid-19 pandemic; such as extended lockdowns and community quarantines worldwide we are seeing more and more small businesses moving their businesses online, and Facebook Shops are navigating the process of doing that with ease by allowing small business owners to set up a shop inside their app easily.

Mark Zuckerberg, Founder and CEO of Facebook announced the launch of Facebook Shops on his Facebook page. ‘Facebook Shops’ is a novel platform that small mom-and-pop stores across the globe can leverage to sell things directly across its apps, such as Whatsapp, Instagram, and Facebook as well. Facebook Shops make it easy for businesses to set up a single online store for customers to access on both Facebook and Instagram. Creating a Facebook Shop is free and straightforward. Businesses can choose the products they want to feature from their catalog, then customise and refine the look and feel of their shop with a cover image and accent colours that exhibit their brand accordingly. In essence, any seller, no matter their size or budget, can establish their businesses online and connect with customers from all corners of the globe at the touch of a button.

People can find Facebook Shops on a business’ Facebook Page or Instagram profile; alternatively, they can discover them through stories or ads. From there, users can browse the full collection, save products they are interested in and place an order – on the business’ website. Consumers will discover their products very quickly and be able to buy items from the business directly through the use of the app.

The founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg explained, “Just like when you are in a physical store and need to ask someone for help, in Facebook Shops you will be able to message a business through Whatsapp Messenger, or Instagram Direct to ask questions, get support, track deliveries and more. Moreover, in the future, you will be able to view a business’ shop and make purchases right within a chat in Whatsapp Messenger or Instagram Direct. ”

Zuckerberg clarified privacy issues that were a concern before the launch of Facebook Shops; he heavily stressed that they had addressed all privacy issues as friends or acquaintances will not know what people are buying or their shopping history across all service platforms without the user’s permission. In addition, he concluded by expressing that the sole purpose of Facebook Shops is to enable people to connect with small businesses they care about and value. “We hope these tools can relieve some of the pressure small businesses are facing right now and help businesses of all sizes prepare for the future,” says Zuckerberg.
